Love Letter Deliverer. 2023, reed (#4, 5), linen, and metal frame, 67"x 32" x 20"

The weaving sculpture Love Letter Deliverer commemorates my mother (1932–2022), who never received love letters because of her arranged marriage. She once expressed, “I wish I could receive love letters with a bunch of clovers from a tall man.”

Weaving carries an ancient and global history. The materials and tools developed by our ancestors continue to hold deep cultural significance. In appreciation of this weaving history, I intertwine memories of my mother—her devotion, her silence, and the era of limited autonomy for women in which she lived.

The sculpture’s indigo blue pays tribute to the women, resonating with Rebecca Solnit’s reflection: “The color blue is the color of longing for the distances you never arrive at... The light that gets lost gives us the beauty of the world, so much of which is in the color blue.”
