Nirvana Gate invites audiences to walk through it, where they experience affirmative sensations, such as joy, happiness, respite, or transcendence. Nirvana is the Buddhist term meaning "the ultimate state of happiness or serenity."
Nirvana Gate is adorned with the Heart Sutra, the most frequently recited text in Mahayana Buddhism, which encourages the practice of wisdom and compassion. The portal is made of traditional Korean mulberry paper dyed a bright, soft yellow. The text is printed on the paper, which is then cut vertically into one-inch strips, resembling a window blind.
