Obangsaek (오방색, 五方色). 2024. melberry paper and mineral pigment, 60" x 55"

Obangsaek (오방색, 五方色) is the traditional Korean color spectrum comprising five core hues: blue (or green), red, yellow, black, and white. It derives from the ancient Chinese philosophical theory of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements (음양오행, 陰陽五行), which teaches that the universe, nature, and humanity must exist in balance. Each color carries symbolic meaning: yellow for nobility and centrality, black for wisdom, blue for creativity and infinity, red for protection, and white for truth and purity.

Rooted in Korean cosmology, Obangsaek embodies fortune, protection, prosperity, and harmony. These vibrant colors permeate Korean culture in many forms — appearing in clothing, food, architecture, and art—each application reinforcing their enduring symbolic power.
